The following message is sent on behalf of Sonnet Ireland, LLA President:
It is with a heavy heart that I am sharing this news. After much debate and serious consideration of the information currently available, the Louisiana Library Association Executive Board has decided to cancel this year’s conference in Lafayette, Louisiana. We intend to offer a virtual option in May. This was not a decision we made lightly, but we want to protect the health and safety of our presenters, attendees, and vendors.
We will be offering refunds to all attendees and vendors. Details about procuring your refund will be released next week. The Conference Committee is also looking at hosting a smaller reception for our award recipients. We are very early in the planning process, so keep an eye out for more details in April once, hopefully, the situation stabilizes.
I apologize that we cannot provide more details at this time, and we appreciate your patience. We need some time to work out the logistics of a virtual offering and coordinate with our presenters.
I know many of you are as disappointed as we are. This is certainly not how I envisioned my year as President. As heartbroken as I am that you won’t get to experience the AMAZING things that Celise Reech-Harper, the Conference Committee, the Executive Board, and I planned for this conference, I am also choosing to see the opportunity these terrible circumstances created. As many of you know, I have been an advocate for virtual programming for years, and it is something that I have actively and repeatedly urged as something we should offer in addition to our physical conference. Now, it’s time to actually do the work and make a virtual offering a reality. It’s not ideal, but this is what we are facing. We can choose to be anxious, or we can choose to be excited. This has been a stressful time for all of us, but we can still be excited about exploring new ways to connect with each other as an organization.
So, I hope I will “see” you at our virtual conference...and see you in Alexandria, Louisiana for our 2021 Annual Conference.
Thank you so much for your time, your patience, and your support. Please stay safe and healthy.
President, Louisiana Library Association 2019-2020
